A Biomechanical Model of Acetabular Cup Deformation in Metal-on-Metal and Conventional Metal- Backed Component Designs

چکیده
Introduction: Press-fit acetabular components are susceptible to deformation following implantation in an under-reamed socket, with excessive deformation of metal-on-metal (MOM) components potentially leading to increased torsional friction, component micromotion and implant loosening. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of design and material considerations on induced deformation in metal-on-metal as well as conventional metal-backed acetabular components.

Polyethylene wear in cemented metal-backed acetabular cups.
We examined radiographic polyethylene wear in 233 cemented total hip arthroplasties (201 patients) with either a metal-backed or a non-metal-backed acetabular cup. All patients had identical cemented one-piece titanium femoral stems with a femoral head diameter of 28 mm. The mean linear wear rate was 0.11 mm/yr in metal-backed sockets and 0.08 mm/yr in non-metal-backed sockets (p = 0.0002). The...

Introduction: In contemporary THA there are two broad approaches to acetabular cup design and materials. One is an all-polyethylene design with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) cement. PMMA possesses a modulus of elasticity of about 2 GPa, which is between that of trabecular and subchondral bone. The second more popular approach, especially for active, younger patients, is the porous metal-backed ...
متن کاملDisassembly of a one-piece metal-backed acetabular component. A case report.
We report a case of late dissociation of a one-piece metal-backed acetabular component, associated with a prolific soft-tissue reaction to the polyethylene debris. The polyethylene liner was not visible on the radiographs. The metal-backed shell could not be removed because of bone ingrowth. We recommend that modular systems be utilised in cementless arthroplasty of the hip and that radiographi...

Locking mechanisms and metal-liner interface surfaces of six modular acetabular systems were evaluated to determine their effect on micromotion and backside wear of the polyethylene liner. Rotational and axial motion between the metal shell and polyethylene liner was measured in the Duraloc (DePuy, Warsaw, IN), Harris-Galante (Zimmer, Warsaw, IN), Impact (Biomet, Warsaw, IN), Lip Loc (Biomet), ...
متن کاملDeformation of 1-piece metal acetabular components.
The success of metal bearings is dependent on several parameters. The effects of in vivo forces on the deformation of monoblock acetabular components have yet to be determined. The purpose of our study was to assess the amount of deformation with press-fit fixation of 1-piece metal acetabular components. Four manufacturers provided 1-piece metal acetabular components in each size (30 cups). Tes...
